Past Events Early spring coppicing Local residents and children from South Street Primary School assisted with coppicing of hedges surrounding the park. Coppicing, or cutting down a tree to produce new growth, has been a way of harvesting wood for thousands of years. Far from being destructive, coppicing rejuvenates the tree and prolongs its life. Each stage of re-growth supports a different variety of plants and animals and the immediate effect of coppicing is to allow light back to the woodland floor prompting the flowering of many woodland plants. Tasks involved removing deadwood, clearing brambles and coppicing to provide sightlines.
Big Clean Up (Jan 2007) A massive thank you to everyone who braved a chilly January morning to clear the park of litter, sofas, suitcases, scaffolding... you name it, we found it!
Many members of the community turned up to help clear piles and piles of rubbish from the park. It is now litter free for all to enjoy and work to begin. Other events to date have included:
We will be planning a schedule of seasonal events at South Street Park (Easter, Summer and Autumn) both as a means of raising money to improve the park, and of course for the community to have fun whilst doing it! Suggestions for future events please! What events would you like to see in South Street Park? Please send your suggestions to southstreetpark@hotmail.co.uk
